Functions

Local fire marshals are authorized and identified by state law as assistants to the state police fire marshal. Duties include:

• Investigating fires
• Obtaining and executing search documents
• Gathering evidence
• Detaining and questioning witnesses for the purpose of establishing the cause of a fire

Local fire marshals are selected for their position by a local fire chief and/or municipality. The state police commissioner then appoints them to the PSP Office.
